Gospel and Spirituals
Most of today’s Pop Music has been influenced by Gospel Music and similarly nowadays Spirituals sometimes sound like the “hits” you hear on the radio. It is religious though and always brings an element of honesty and “in-the-moment” to any performances. Brasserie Julien hosts Gospel nights twice a month featuring artists from Harlem and Brooklyn who learn that repertoire in churches. Even in New York City, everybody knows most of the songs and gets in the “spirit” without hesitations. Since Gospel is a music often performed by a choir, everybody in the club joins in and sing along with the band.
Jazz and Blues
Blues, Gospel and Jazz are all African-American Classical music. Born in the South of the United States in the late 19th century, Blues has a simple form but very “heavy content” and also humor. It is meant to tell a story about the beauty and struggle of life. Brasserie Julien has been inviting some of the best Blues singers, accompanied by the top New York guitarists and saxophonists. People sing, holler, shout and chant with the band with a smile on their face and a tear in their eyes: Live in NYC!
New York Soul Music:
What do you get when you put R&B and Blues together? Soul Music! New York City has Soul especially on Saturday night at Brasserie Julien. NYC most “funky” Soul singers make our “regulars” clap their hands and even get up and dance. It is warm, it is heart-felt but also it is totally about the groove and making your body move.
